I personally do ballet for the connection with my colleagues and the audience and I am motivated by the promise that I will soon be back sharing moments with people I love. In the meantime we have to continue to create. Twyla Tharp said “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” That’s more applicable than ever these days. As artists we spend our lives building worlds. But in building these fantastic worlds we’re really trying to get to the core of what it means to be human. Each night we tell stories of the human condition. We tell stories of love, regret, loss and joy. Yet so much of ballet training is trying to get away from what makes us human- our weaknesses, flaws, asymmetry and imperfection. In having to take a step back from ABT what I miss most are those shared moments of humanity: exchanging knowing glances from across the stage. Squeezing your partners hand as you bow. The nerves before the curtain goes up and looking out to the audience as the curtain comes down. It is a time to pause. To lean into the discomfort of what it means to be a human right now and share from that place. Learn. Experience. Grow. Love a lot.
