How’s your mental health been recently?

With more time on my hands, I’ve found myself oscillating between a sense of calm, and days spent with a crippling pit of anxiety in my stomach. Slowing down has caused us all to spend more time with our minds, and for me it’s highlighted how negative my thought patterns can be. I realise I’ve been putting a lot of pressure on myself to use this time as productively as possible, never allowing myself to just be.

I was reluctant to talk about it here, knowing how much people are going through at the moment - I recognise how privileged I am, and how much I have to be grateful for. For many, this crisis is not the 'great leveller' some have hailed it to be. However, wherever you are and whatever your situation, there is no doubt that the current epidemic is compounding the loneliness, fear and anxiety so many of us already struggle with.

With that in mind, it’s never been more important to double down on keeping a healthy mind - particularly for us men who often struggle to open up. Everyone has their own way of doing that, but in case it’s helpful, here are some of the things that have helped me these past few weeks.

1. VOCALISE how you’re feeling. It’s amazing how much it can help to tell just one other person. - Chances are they’re feeling it too.
2. Move: Run, yoga or workout. Even though it’s often the last thing you feel like, 10 minutes of exercise never fails to help.
3. Meditate. If your head is spinning it can seem counter productive just to sit with it, however I’ve found using the headspace app for 10 mins in the morning and 10 mins in the evening has really helped over the last few weeks.
4. Physical distancing not social distancing! I’ve really enjoyed connecting with old friends during this time, and if you don’t live at home don’t forget to FaceTime your mum. It always works a treat 🙂
5. If you’re struggling, look up @mindcharity or @giveusashoutinsta both of which offer an amazingly supportive service to those in crisis.

Sending you all loads of love wherever you are ❤️
