20 years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I had a teacher who required me to memorize a fair amount of philosophical material. Those poems and speeches formed me, and I return to them often. When crises have come, and they involve death at scale—one refrain in particular always whispers across my mind. •

When this crisis began, I decided to make something of that lamentation. I hoped this would be a time of solidarity, common purpose, and love for one's fellow man. Today, as the death toll from Covid-19 sets new records here and across the globe, I offer you something that has always been important to me: Meditation 17. •

This film was produced with respect and adherence to the federal, state, and local guidelines for social distancing and virus mitigation. It was a profound honor to work with some of the people I admire most, albeit almost entirely virtually. This film would not exist without Andrew Thomas, Sam Billen, Yuka Naito-Billen, Justin Roberts, and Jonathan Horst all going above and beyond to see my vision through—and enhance it greatly—in spite of everything we each face. •

If Meditation 17 means something to you, on behalf of my teacher, Mr. Mykel, I ask that you consider memorizing it, or at least sharing it widely. •
