Photo by @babaktafreshi | These little "mushrooms" are giant radio telescopes on a 5,000-meter-high (16,000ft) plateau in the Andes. Overlooking the Atacama Desert in Chile, ALMA is one of the world’s most complex observatories. As the bone-chilling wind blew into my face, the vivid colors of dusk were fading to the eye—but not to the camera. Stars of Orion and Taurus were setting above the array of 66 movable dishes, about 12 meters (yards) wide, that work together as a single giant telescope. Massive 28-wheel German vehicles weighing 130 tonnes move the dishes up to 16 kilometers (10 miles) apart, which gives ALMA a powerful variable “zoom” based on what astronomers are observing. When the dishes cluster in a pack like this, ALMA reveals fainter, wider targets. Observing radio wavelengths, the array works day and night and even in cloudy weather, as the signal passes through.
