One of my favorite purchases from my travels. I bought these shoes in a tiny shop in Tbilisi where Georgian designers sell their creations.
My favorite part is the Georgian writing on them which says "I love you" again and again like a meditation.
The Kartuli language is extremely important to Georgians. It's rich and beautiful (my friend Sarah of @tasteGeorgia noted that legend says it was developed out of the shape of grapevines 🍇), and it is very much their own.
One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is the amount of people that believe Georgians speak Russian.
While many of the older generations know Russian because they had to learn it during Soviet times, it is 𝘯𝘰𝘵 their native tongue.
Any declaration by the Soviet government to remove Georgian/Kartuli as a state language has been met with protests, marches and defiance.
And so the mother tongue prevails in Georgia, and it's celebrated in April.
I've been thinking of getting a tattoo in the cursive form, which is art in itself.
I had to cancel my reader tour this May because of covid 😭. I may not be able to make it back to Georgia at all this year. But at least I can walk around in these shoes and feel connected to one of my favorite places.
I love you I love you I love you 💗
