For the tens and tens of you out there who haven’t been asking me for my quarantine movie recommendations, here is the list of films getting us through right now. Let me know what your recommendations are!

1). Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman- long before Schitt’s Creek, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy were giving brilliant performances in this comic masterpiece. Christopher Guest is a national treasure, and if you don’t know at least some of the lyrics to ‘Stool Boom’, I’m not sure we’re compatible.

2) Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard- actors in quarantine- let this be a cautionary tale. In all seriousness, this is a perfect film.
3) James L. Brooks’ Broadcast News- we all might need a Holly Hunter spontaneous meltdown moment right about now. I am forever in love with all three of the lead characters in this film. Brilliantly written and acted. The scene between Holly Hunter and Albert Brooks toward the end of this movie is one of the best romantic scenes ever filmed.

4) Hal Ashby’s Shampoo- Warren Beatty’s shag in this deserves its own credit. This is peak Beatty- and he, Julie Christie, and Goldie Hawn are all brilliant. Ahhh, simpler times.

5). Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown- need I say more? One of my favorite Almodóvar films. You know you’re a boss when spellcheck automatically puts the accent over your last name.
6). Bruce Robinson’s Withnail and I- quarantined with your best friend in an unusual place? I can’t think of a better film for you. I notice something new every time I watch.

7). Ridley Scott’s Alien- attention all masochists- IMO, this is the best horror film about isolation ever made. I could go waaay down a nerdy rabbit hole right now, but I’ll just keep it at this : DON’T be like Ash right now. Follow protocol.

8). Todd Haynes’ Safe- OK, TBH, I haven’t been able to go back here yet. But Todd Haynes film about disease and immunity in the post industrial era feels oddly prescient- and Julianne Moore is, as always, phenomenal.
