Kagoshima prefecture is in the south of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four major Japanese islands.
About 1.6 million people live in Kagoshima.
Sakurajima in Kagoshima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Small eruptions occur on Sakurajima on almost daily basis.
Volcanic materials in the soil make Sakurajima a source for Sakurajima-Daikon radishes, roughly the size of a basketball.
Given the area’s volcanic activity, natural hot springs are found in abundance. Ibusuki city is famous for its sand steamed hot spring.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA, has the country’s main launch facility in Tanegashima island of Kagoshima prefecture.
Kagoshima is recognized as the home to Shochu, traditional alcoholic beverages of Japan. Shochu is rich in variety and generally made from sweet potato, barley, or rice.
Kagoshima is also famous for its Kurobuta Berkshire pork. “Kurobuta” means black pig in Japanese.
Yakushima island is registered as a World Natural Heritage. The island is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of Japan’s oldest living trees.
