It has been two weeks since I last went out - a coffee shop. To work, to take a meeting.
Two weeks ago, I was talking with Ellen, with friends, expressing our concern and fear. We asked if this would get bad, or if we’d be affected.
A day later, and everything had changed. No more gym visits or coffee shop work. We bought toilet paper because we actually needed some. We evaluated how much extra food we could actually stock up on in our tiny home.
Now we are rationing, eating less, pickling, baking bread. Work deadlines remain the same, though that feels wrong to me.
For our family, our actual life hasn’t changed much. We have spent every day together and worked together, homeschooled, and parented within a tiny silver can of a home for four years. We’re used to this, and we love being around one another.
Yet it *feels* different. It’s hard to focus during the day. My emotions are many. Our routines are shaken by the world outside these walls. We’re wishing we’d have seen it coming sooner - that we could have gotten up north. We wonder when we will see our beloved lake again, and fear the worst. The place we call home is in another country and we can’t be there. This, for us, is heartbreaking. It is grief. The fear of the unknown future - this fear is also grief.
As a gentle reminder - everything has changed and continues to do so. Yet no matter what changes any of us are facing, we are ALL grieving the loss of something or many somethings. Time, schooling for our children, a place we cannot go to, friends around a dinner table, alone time with our partner.
Yes, there are other ways to connect and yes, we get to slow down. Yet we don’t have to put a perfectly positive spin on this every second of every day.
Ignoring our feelings of grief, despair, fear, loss, anxiety...ignoring them will not make them go away. Feel your feelings. It’s okay to do so.
In a single day, we can laugh AND cry. We can feel angry and feel happy. We can be afraid and feel hope.
Let yourself feel each and every one.
It is okay to acknowledge what you are feeling right now. It is okay to not be okay about what’s happening. It is okay, it is okay, it is okay.
