He and his 40-odd Indonesian crew have been at sea for over two months since leaving Taiwan, part of a two-year contract to work 12-hour night shifts for $450 a month. The wind was blowing about 30 mph at sunrise, which is good weather in these southern seas. The captain was trusting enough to give me free run of the boat, and Mohammad offered a safety line for going out on the jiggers.
