This lifeline of the Southwest supplies water to 40 million people across seven states and two countries. It also doesn’t reach the sea anymore, and as a result it is often called the “most loved and most litigated” river in the world. Now, with the help of a more volatile climate, reports predict that its depleted flow could shrink by 20 to 30% more. I’ve followed this river and its water challenges for a decade, and I’m still shocked by how few realize its value and continue to ask too much of it.
