Jim Valvano “Jimmy V” – ESPY Awards, 1993 • I watched this speech for the first time in December. When I felt scared and lost, these words motivated me and gave me hope. Jim Valvano was a basketball coach, broadcaster, speaker, and the first winner of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. At the time he gave this acceptance speech, he was fighting cancer. If you haven’t laughed, spent time thinking, or cried yet today, his speech will make you do all three.

I’ve come to realize that practicing social distancing isn’t new to me. After the surgery I had on my kidney, I was inside for weeks. Trust me, I understand how strange it can feel to have your schedule shifted in a drastic way. Days started to blend together, and I tried to numb my emotions and protect myself with different distractions.

Jim Valvano’s words meant a lot to me because they encouraged me to continue to FEEL and appreciate every moment. His words reminded me that there is always something I can do.

I think uncertainty is a feeling that many of us share. It’s becoming clearer every day that everyone’s lives will be affected by COVID-19, whether you have the virus or not.

If you have the ability to social distance, I really hope that you are doing so. It’s very important that we do our part to keep others safe. My thoughts are with the people who have other health issues and needs – they are having to navigate additional challenges during this unprecedented and difficult time. My thoughts and gratitude are also with all of the health care providers and people with professions that require them to keep working.

Let’s respect their bravery and efforts by doing our part.
