The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed historic legislation to make lynching a federal crime. The Emmett Till Antilynching Act, introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois, was named after the 14-year-old African American boy who was brutally murdered in a racist attack in Mississippi in 1955, an event that drew national attention to the atrocities and violence that African Americans have faced in the United States. "Today Congress has an opportunity to acknowledge its responsibility for its historic failure to confront and end the horror of lynching in America," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated.
