These voices are challenging misconceptions and misunderstandings about LGBTQ people including homosexuality. However, the way this film is directed and many of the scenes depicted show a total lack of respect for such diversity. Here is some excerpts from the film’s introduction: “This is a teen-age horror film with comedy touch about a group of high school students who face  and overcome “challenges” caused by vampires who turn straight people into gay by biting them. Since the medieval times, vampires have resided peacefully alongside with humans in Romania. Now they have decided to look for another place and found Nobara high school in Ibaraki prefecture in Japan as their potential new home. Kyohei, 2nd year student of that high school, was enjoying his school life until his best friend Goro was attacked. The whole classroom was shocked when Goro, a well-known womaniser, turned up to school dressed as a woman and “became” gay. Homophobic expressions and directions command no respect, disregard diversity and project a false and damaging impression about LGBTQ people. As a member of the LGBTQ community myself, I have experienced discrimination in my daily life. I feel there is a deep-rooted prejudice about homosexuality and LGBTQ people at the root of such discrimination and it feels it is very difficult to eradicate discrimination. However, there is a growing movement to recognise and respect diversity in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression across the world including Japan.
