During my time in the Canadian Rockies I walked right into a marten on a trail, but since I didn’t have the right lenses, I didn’t take any photos and just watched figuring there would be many more in eastern Canada. However, as I made my way east, these little mustelids proved quite difficult to pin down and seemed mostly nocturnal, only leaving new trails at night. I eventually tracked down this marten’s den and waited and waited for it to come out. One morning, I waited nearby for nearly 3 hours before checking another location for only half an hour. When I returned, a new set of tracks were made which meant I missed the window and the marten had gone off hunting. I repeatedly checked the location over the course of the day to see if it had returned, but had no such luck. It wasn’t until early the next morning that I found the marten scurrying across the snow and scaling various trees, possibly looking for blue jays (jay feathers were around its den).
