Sitting all the way up front, he scans the water, occasionally gliding into it to collect shells or hunt reef fish. I sat behind, trying not to fall off the dug-out canoe. I spent 10 days off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia, in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, documenting the oceanic diet of the Bajau people. As in all self-sufficient communities I have visited, the search for food has a tremendous impact on lifestyle.
