In early January, officials from the health authority in the central city of Wuhan summoned Dr. Li in the middle of the night, demanding to know why he had shared the information. Three days later, the police compelled him to sign a statement that his warning constituted “illegal behavior.”⁣ ⁣ In an interview with The Times earlier this month, Dr. Li told us: “If the officials had disclosed information about the epidemic earlier, I think it would have been a lot better.
