Ishikawa, with his Makina 6x7 cameras and Kodak film, has been all over the world- I mean, EVERYWHERE. He's been to both poles, the tops of most mountains you can think of (he's climbed Everest TWICE, with his Makina.)- he's been all over Alaska, Canada, Europe, and islands all over the Pacific. A popular photographer, since 2003 he's held dozens of solo and group shows at galleries and major museums. He's also published nearly twenty beautiful photobooks of his work- including a children's book of Mt. Fuji- and is working on an 47-volume look at Japan (prefecture by prefecture) with @superlabo . And in addition to a PhD from the Tokyo University of the Arts he's also earned several of Japan's major photography awards AND- - get this- - he is still just 42 years old. Lacking any kind of showy ego, Ishikawa is a gracious, wonderful guy with a good sense of humor who, after coffee, didn't object to my suggestion to climb that concrete train in a park in Ebisu, camera in hand. The #Makina is his workhorse- and is all he takes on his expeditions. (He's got a stable of them that are in rotation with a service shop in Osaka.) I find Ishikawa's photographs of the world engaging due to their directness, lack of pretense, and charm. His work is an antidote to contemporary overly digital / preset plastered #TravelPhotography you’ll see- he seems more interested in the simple straightforward beauty of the world than what an over-processed/over-composed cliched expression of it could be. Real life rules. #KodakPortra helps. #NaokiIshikawa #石川直樹 #NipponCamera #日本カメラ」1月23日 19時54分 - straightree8848
