A few years ago I lived along this coast for a few months shooting a story for @NatGeo magazine about southern Africa’s marine protected areas. I documented everything from bottlenose dolphins and vast schools of baitfish to park rangers teaching in a remote bush school and ensuring that all children were properly vaccinated. Conservation needs to be as much focused on people as on biodiversity. To be successful communities living within or along the edges of protected areas need to accrue regular direct benefits (education, medical care, tourism revenues, improved legal harvests due to biomass spill over out of reserves etc... ).
