I was going through old files and found Richard’s original adoption card from Downey Shelter. I adopted him on June 3, 2012, and this paper says he was surrendered on May 8! I didn’t realize until now that he’d been at the shelter for almost a month. I remember asking the volunteer if I could come back next week (I needed time to think it over, I wasn’t planning on adopting a cat that day). Her response makes sense to me now: “he won’t last here that long...” she said. If no one adopted him soon, then... 💀 😔
They were calling him Picho at the shelter, but I wanted to give him a new start, albeit with a phonetically similar name so he wouldn’t be too confused since he was already a year-and-a-half old, so I called him Richard ❤️ This year, he’ll be 9 years old! 🎂
If you’re thinking of adopting, I’m a big fan of adopting adult animals. They’ve outgrown the juvenile phase, and their personalities are more clear. Since most people want kittens/puppies, the adults often have a much harder time finding homes, and they will really, really appreciate the love you give them.
