Jerry Herman was largely the reason I do what I do, and his music shaped my way of story telling with two words : joy, and tenderness. The shows absent from this photo that the legend and broadway cultural cornerstone composer and lyricist wrote are Mack and Mabel, and La Cage Aux Folles. He loved his characters and felt them in each note and word he wrote for them in ways I will never be able to, but always will aspire to. His anthems, from “hello dolly” and “mame”, to “ time heals everything” to “I am what I am” define Broadway in their sense of jubilation and celebration of our higher, more glamorous, more feeling aspirational selves and transcend lifes anxieties and feed us to hope for a better future, and our best selves.
Jerry Herman’s passing was not a surprise, but it is no less heart breaking for me.
I wish I had known the man so I could thank him everyday for what he inspires in me.
@marc_shaiman, I’ll never forget our time watching Carole Channing in her final run as Dolly and crying like a big very proudly gay baby. Or the time I took @iamfrankmeli to see La Cage and watched him soak in the entirety of that ground breaking magic.
So thank you to Jerry Herman and all who were so fortunate to collaborate with him. Thank you for the music. Thank you for believing we are all just a little better then we believe ourselves to be. #ripjerryherman
