Considering that it was around sixteen years since I had last performed it, it was exhilarating to have that brilliant and unique text in my mouth, perhaps more than ever before because of where our world is right now. How much the themes of Dickens' masterpiece resonate in this political climate. Years ago when Roy Hattersley (outstanding Labour MP) saw it in London, he said that Parliament should pass a law requiring me to perform it on the floor of the House of Commons every December. Roy is now Lord Hattersley and a member of the House of Lords. Maybe he can talk that House into extending an invitation. Photos by Joan Marcus.
