Don't leave footsteps - when what is now called sport climbing started in the seventies, it was often called „clean climbing“, since one of the underlying ideas was that you wouldn’t alter anything on a climb and after ascending, there would be no traces left of you climbing on it. You definitely wouldn’t move rocks at the bottom of a boulder problem for example. This spirit is still very alive in places like Joshua Tree. Case in point - when I waited for my turn to climb the beautiful boulder Embryo, the pictured climber kicked off the crucial hold for the left palm (you see it falling under his right foot) In another area it might have been glued back on, but in Joshua Tree, that’s a no-no. Emybryo now is a much more challenging problem, somebody might be still able to palm the spot where the hold was, or it will be done with done with a crazy all-out dyno (which of course will be really scary because of the rocks below) - the point is that accept nature as it is and don’t leave footsteps. This includes tick marks, that the pictured climber climber carefully brushed off after his ascent. I like that very much!
