For just 275 cows (yep, we're talking moo-la 🐄), you could've had a bird like this in 16th-century Europe.
With so many different currencies across the continent at that time, it's challenging today to understand the actual buying power of goods and art.
☝️ But the cost of a milking cow was relatively stable across Europe, so it's an easy equalizer for comparison.
One cow was equal to:
🐮 35 days' pay for a skilled craftsman in London
🐮 27 bushels of wheat in Vienna
🐮 5,350 loaves of rye bread in Brussels
So why was this hollow bird so udder-ly expensive? 💰 At the time, rock crystal was priced at its weight in gold. The coveted qualities of both natural wonder and fine craftsmanship gave it the hefty price tag.
Compare prices with other 16th-century Northern European decorative arts in "Relative Values: The Cost of Art in the Northern Renaissance" on view in Gallery 521 near the Lehman Wing.
🎨 German. Bird, ca. 1580, with later renovation. Rock crystal, with gilded silver and rubies. #TheMet
