It's with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Floyd, a well-known flamingo. Floyd was hatched at the Zoo in 2013 with deformed legs. Through intensive veterinary care and round-the-clock nursing, Floyd's legs were repaired and he was able to move without assistance. On Saturday, December 14, Floyd was injured after a fall in his habitat. Despite the immediate assistance of animal care staff and veterinarians, Floyd's condition deteriorated severely enough to affect his quality of life. Staff made the compassionate decision to euthanize him.
Floyd was well known because of his unique story and the heroic efforts animal care staff made to extend his life. During his life he served as an ambassador representing his species and inspiring conservation action.
