Illustrator Ed Merlin Murray (@e_merlin_m) begins all his projects the old-fashioned way — with a real-life drawing using paper and ink. “This satisfies a daily need to make things with my hands,” says Ed, who lives in northern England. “Going on to make these things move, even in the most simple way, still seems like a type of magic to my childlike brain.”⁣

A former DJ and producer, Ed created the music to accompany this turntable-based phenakistoscope animation, which began as a flip book, then was translated into the circle format. “It was nice to be able to join up my love of drawing and animation with my love of turntablism and music,” he says.⁣
