The male calf who has been named Jabali which translates to 'strong' in Swahili is the sixth calf for mum Djembe who is a very relaxed mother. Bongo numbers in the wild are unfortunately very low with less than 100 individuals left in the wild making them a critically endangered species. Jabali acts as an ambassador for his wild counterparts to help raise awareness for their plight and what people can do to help. Those who visit both Taronga Zoo Sydney and Taronga Western Plains can help the Eastern Bongo and other wildlife native to Kenya by purchasing Beads for Wildlife products available from the Zoo Shop.
