This is one of my most precious mountain memories, taken the day after I first tried yak butter tea in Tibet and noticed the strange mental clarity it gave me despite hypoxia at 18,000 feet. It was the inspiration for the first experiments that led me to create Bulletproof Coffee. My travel journal from that day also shows the notes as I was pondering the right name for the field of biohacking, a movement that started that day and is now a new word in Miriam Webster’s dictionary. Behind me is Mt. Kailash, the “Mt. Olympos” of Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Bon religions, located in remote Western Tibet. The mountain has a special energy that words don’t describe. It gave something to me. To say thanks, I planned to sent a special offering to the mountain. Four years after my Mt. Kailash adventure, as I was in Guatemala at the first Bulletproof coffee plantation, I hand picked three perfectly ripe mold-free coffee cherries. I carefully dried them in the sun, wrapped them in a small piece of South American hand-woven fabric used for carrying sacred objects, and tucked it into my daily use backpack. I carried those beans with me as Bulletproof grew. Every day. For years. When my friend @dawatarchinphillips led a pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash two years ago, I asked him to carry the beans to the mountain to leave as an offering of gratitude. It was hard to let them go, but worth it. Coffee is for sharing. So is gratitude.
