It was our summit bid on Cayambe (18,996ft) in Ecuador - a trip we had been planning for over a year. My dad had trained for months, hiking up Mount Sanitas with 30 lbs in his pack and grinding on the stair master at the climbing gym. “Dad, it’s 10:30 pm and you just had a cup of coffee and breakfast. What the hell else are you gonna do tonight if you don’t try?” He was massively intimidated. At age 64, he was by far the weakest of the group. The acclimatization hikes were tiring and made his knees ache. He had a hard time sleeping at the hut which was at 15,000ft. He was exhausted. The idea of climbing 4,000 vertical feet in the middle of the night in the rain was nothing short of daunting and seemingly impossible. “Ok I’ll try.” He reluctantly agreed. An hour and a half later, at the toe of the glacier, he said “I think this is the end for me.” “Do you really want to hike down in the middle of the night?” Adrian asked. That was the last time my dad mentioned giving up. Another 8 hours later and he stood on top of Cayambe. It was by far the hardest thing he’d ever done. The deepest he’s ever had to dig. The most proud/scared/emotional day we’ve ever spent together. We all thought he couldn’t do it, especially him. I had been there so many times. In that dark place of self doubt when everything feels impossible and failure is imminent. But that place can be comforting as well because there’s only one thing left to do: try. No strings attached. No expectations. Just try. That’s what he did and it was truly inspiring to witness. Congratulations Dad! I still can’t believe you did it but you did and it was epic and awesome.
