It is called the Sechuran fox or the Peruvian desert fox. It is not the genus Vulpes so,like all the South American foxes, it is not considered a “true fox”. Canids first evolved in North America millions of years ago. The animals that would go on to create the “true foxes” diverged about 10 million years ago. At this point in time North and South America were not connected as isthmus of Panama had not formed yet. About 3 million years ago this formed allowing Canids, such as the ancestors of the Sechuran fox, to enter South America and diversify into many different species. The Sechuran fox now lives in Ecuador and Peru. They weight 5-9 lbs and have an agouti coloring. It lives on a diet of fruits and seeds, but also enjoys insects, rodents and eggs. Unfortunately it is considered near threatened due to habitat loss.
