Barbara Hepworth, born in Wakefield, England 1903, was an iconic artist and sculptress focused on modernistic designs ovular and organic in shape, exploring the shifting contours of the interior and exterior. She was one of the few female artists of her generation to achieve international prominence and a leading practitioner of direct-carving working directly in to the chosen material. She was even commissioned to build a monumental bronze sculpture in 1964 for the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York “Single Form” - her largest piece of existing work.
