Feeling like a hungry hippo this holiday weekend? This herbivorous mammal munches on up to 80 pounds (36.3 kilograms) of grass each night. While that might sound like a lot, it’s actually not much for the gigantic hippopotamus—it’s only 1 to 1.5% of its body weight! During the day, it takes refuge from the heat of the Sun in rivers and lakes. It’s known for “sweating blood”—but the red substance isn’t blood. It’s fluid that acts as a sunscreen and moisturizer—and is also thought to help protect hippo skin wounds against germs!
