Did you know that there are more than 15 species of dumbo octopus? The adorable deep-sea cephalopods flap their ear-like fins as they move through the water—a behavior that inspired scientists to name the genus Grimpoteuthis after Disney’s flying elephant. They are some of the deepest-dwelling octopuses, inhabiting the seafloor at depths of up to 13,000 feet (3,962 meters), feeding on prey such as bristleworms. They live so deep in the ocean that they have few foes and lack a common defense feature among octopuses: an ink sac! The average size of a dumbo octopus is somewhere between 7-12 inches (20-30 centimeters).
