The Tokyo-based interior designer has created more than 500 retail spaces worldwide, for clients ranging from Uniqlo to Thom Browne. While he was growing up, Masamichi’s parents hoped he’d one day run their business, a furniture shop. They sent him to study in Osaka, where he enrolled in an interior design course. At first, he was mostly in it for the extracurriculars. “Being fond of music, I went to record stores, and being fond of fashion, I went to fashion boutiques,” he said. Enough time spent in record shops inspired the realization that design goes into every part of an album. 🎶 Today, Masamichi’s 5-story studio is filled with CDs, art and antiques. “If you’re well-trained, you can imagine what kind of design you’re going to make before you even start,” he said. “But I want to be inspired by a lot of different things.” All of his projects begin as concepts and, eventually, become elaborate models. Wonderwall’s model room is stocked with miniatures: chairs, umbrellas, plants, chapeaus. But while the details are important, “What I want to do is create the atmosphere — things that we cannot see,” he said. Here, one of his latest projects: @welcomeovo in Tokyo, which held its grand opening this weekend. 📸: Kozo Takayama . . .
