Photo by @stephen_matera | Waves crash on a rocky shore at sunset in Hawaii. The Hawaiian archipelago was formed by volcanic activity from an undersea magma source called the Hawaiian hotspot. The chain of islands formed over millions of years; the northwestern islands are the oldest and most eroded, while the southeastern islands, including the island of Hawaii, are younger and more active volcanically. Kilauea famously erupted in May 2018, wiping out neighborhoods and towns. Lōihi Seamount is an active submarine volcano about 20 miles to the southeast of the island of Hawaii that geologists expect to rise above sea level between 10,000 and 100,000 years from now.
