American born and Zimbabwean raised, I have always been a part of these two places. I could not tell you which one is more home to me than the other. In this advanced technological age there are so many ways to connect; to learn about places and people outside ourselves. In a time when I would imagine we would come closer together as global citizens, sometimes I feel a divide is growing. That’s why I am so keen to share this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter. We feature @unfpa, a section of the United Nations that fights for the potential and rights of women and girls in parts of the world that are often forgotten and where it is harder than ever to be a girl. @UNFPA addresses how girls can strive to find their power in a female body. It helps them with issues related to reproductive health, child marriage and domestic violence and has had a transformative impact. We’re also highlighting some unbelievably resilient and brilliant women living in dire circumstances in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya - women who have found ways to excel in their various passions and abilities, everything from filmmaking, to fixing cars, to stove making and studying software engineering. These women are an inspiration. The disadvantage of being considered people with no country has not deterred them from striving to explore their own potential to provide for their families and contribute to the world. Last but not least, we have a feature on films made by and about women - a phenomenon often underrepresented in the global discourse. These stories are deeply affective. I believe they have the power to change lives for the better and can help connect a fractured globe. Let’s take the time to get to know someone else’s story this month. We may just find ourselves changed by women we would otherwise never have gotten the chance to know. We have an opportunity to make the world a little smaller. Let’s not miss it.
