America's largest retailer, Walmart, announced on Sept. 20 that it would stop selling electronic cigarettes at its stores—and Sam's Clubs—once its current inventory sells out. The move comes after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports of almost 400 serious lung illnesses and at least six deaths that it linked to vaping, which a congressional committee is also investigating. To a remarkable degree, writes Jamie Ducharme in this week's cover story, a single company is front and center in one of the biggest public-health crises facing the country. While Juul products have not been implicated in the deaths, the CDC has advised Americans to “consider not using e-cigarette products” while its investigation is ongoing.
