In 1953, Charles James designed a evening gown for Austine Hearst, the wife of Mr. William Randolph Hearst, Jr.
The dress was originally commissioned to James by Augustine Hearst, wife of William Randolph Hearts Jr, for the Eisenhower Inaugural Ball in 1953.
Unfortunatey the gown was not ready in time for the function (being late in completing his orders became in later years one of the main reasons behind his fall from grace). However Augustine Hearst was able to wear it to the coronation ball in London in June later that year.
This evening dress of white satin and faille with black velvet appliqué has a strapless bodice is strapless and a very full skirt. The creation expresses James's fascination with geometry and mathematics: while the four lobes are not of equal dimension, they readily fit within a circle.
Charles James gowns are elaborate constructions that celebrate their own beauty and of whom wears them on. The images of his creations, pictured by great names of the photography -such as Cecil Beaton, Lilian Bassman, Horst P. Horst etc - have become symbols of a timeless beauty.
