She’s been buying school supplies and necessities for her students out of her own pocket but her daughter convinced her to write to me. And I’m so glad she did! Here’s her story: “I teach kindergarten in a rural Title 1 school in South Carolina. My school, McKissick Academy of Science and Technology, is a magnet school that is determined to change the lives of our students. Most of my students have never left our state or even our small town. I want to bring the world to them. The majority of my students live below the poverty line with caretakers and relatives that are not their parents. Around 85% of students in my school receive free and reduced lunch. Many students come from families that do not have more than a middle school education nor speak English. Last year, over half the students in my classroom did not have books at home to read. This broke my heart. I became a teacher because I wanted to help children believe in themselves and reach for the stars. I teach almost everything in small groups to meet the needs of all my students. My classroom is positive. I want students to walk into the room and stand taller knowing that this room was made for them. The mindset I’m teaching to my students is that if they believe in their ability, work hard, accept help from others, thrive on challenge and don’t see failure as a way to quit but an opportunity to learn, then they will succeed at whatever they try in school and in life. This wishlist is for my students, not for me. Everything on that list will be used by them daily. The area my students struggle with the most is reading. I have to be able to get books home for these kids to practice and read to and with their families. Kindergarten and the early childhood grades set the learning path for a child.
