Looking at Ed Ruscha's work, it's perhaps unsurprising to learn that he started his career creating graphics for an LA advertising agency. By using eye-catching type, his work references the world of advertising and makes us expect a straightforward slogan. Instead, he creates strange or contradictory images that catch us off-guard.
