In 2006, when Steve Jobs inaugurated @apple’s first store on Fifth Avenue, he planted a glass cube to mark the entrance to the subterranean space. That cube remains (though entirely rebuilt) but when it opens to the public tomorrow, the store underneath it—and the plaza that surrounds it—will be entirely new. Apple tapped @fosterandpartners—the architects behind its Apple Park HQ in Cupertino, California—to expand and redesign the store. From the expanded plaza, with 18 “Skylenses” that pop up like inverted moon craters (and you can sit on them!), to the mirrored spiral staircase and an interior space whose lighting system was designed by an astrophysicist, the store is the latest word in cutting-edge design.
