フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 9月17日 23時37分
Artist @tschabalalaself uses a variety of materials—like paint, fabric, and recycled materials—to collage and create figures that explore attitudes toward race and gender. In her large-scale painting “Pant,” which the museum recently acquired, a female figure stands unapologetically open-legged. A third, yellow leg protrudes from her body, alluding to the stereotype “who wears the pants,” an idiom that assumes a heteronormative masculine role. By exploring the black body in this way, Self asserts its power and ability to expand its identity. On view now in “Present Tense: Recent Gifts of Contemporary Art."
