Did you know that a Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) sometimes hammers so hard that its pounding may break a small tree into two? Pileated woodpeckers drill into dead trees searching for carpenter ants, which they extract from the wood with their barbed tongues. To manage the stress, the strong, elastic beak is backed by dense, spongy bone. Curiously, the back of the tongue wraps around the skull. Some scientists think it may act as an additional shock absorber.
