Arabella Mansfield was an educator and activist.  She was the first woman in the US to pass the bar examination and the nation’s first female attorney in 1869.  Despite Iowa states law restrictions, she took the test and earned high scores.  Shortly after, Iowa became the first state to accept women and minorities into its bar.
