Till's murder came amid a wave of lynchings of black people across the South.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Parks said she considered her options when the bus driver demanded that she give up her seat for a white passenger. “I didn’t even know if I would get off the bus alive,” she said. “I felt that, if I did stand up, it meant that I approved of the way I was being treated, and I did not approve.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Her action helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and her continued activism helped sustain it.
