My name is Ross Henry and I’m the project manager for one of our technology demonstration missions, called Raven. Raven was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2017, and the mission is now testing a navigation system that’s kind of like autopilot for spacecraft.
.
This past week, our team had the opportunity to do a visual inspection of Raven’s hardware using an external camera system on the outside of the space station. When we saw the results of the video inspection, the entire Raven team was at a loss for words. Not only did the Raven hardware look nearly as pristine as the day it launched, but there was also an emotional reaction to seeing something you’ve worked so hard on for so long operating perfectly in orbit. This video is certainly a testament to all of the extremely hard work and dedication of the Raven engineers and technicians here at NASA Goddard.

Over the past two and a half years since launch, Raven’s hardware has performed flawlessly on the space station. However, the performance of the hardware alone doesn’t always tell the entire story about the health of the system. In space, hardware is exposed to an extremely harsh environment: drastic temperature swings, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the Sun without the protection of Earth’s atmosphere and a vacuum environment devoid of air. All of that can wreak havoc on the materials used to build our spaceflight hardware, which is why it’s important to keep an eye on what it looks like.
