What makes it special? The vaccine was developed by the girls’ father, Dr. Maurice Hilleman (not pictured), using a sample he took from Jeryl Lynn’s throat when *she* had the mumps.🦠 When Jeryl Lynn awoke him one night to show him her swollen cheeks (a signature of mumps), Hilleman swabbed her throat to collect a sample of the virus, and then drove the sample to his lab.🔬 In 1966, just a few years later the "Jeryl Lynn Strain" was given to her younger sister and this photo taken. In early 1968 doctors began administering the Jeryl Lynn Strain mumps vaccine to the American public.💉 During the 1960s, mumps affected a million people in the United States every year. Today, that number has been drastically reduced.📉 Dr. Hilleman, born on this day in 1919, was instrumental in developing over 40 vaccines including Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR), chicken pox, meningitis, pneumonia, hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
