Monitors were the last major thing we needed. I had a short list of options, and coincidentally NAMM was coming up so I figured I would check them out there. A week or so later I was at the gate getting ready to leave to Anaheim and ran into an old engineer friend of mine who was also heading there. I’d mentioned my monitor search and he made me promise not to buy anything until after I checked out something he had back home. He texted me a picture of them while on the flight and all I could say to myself was “!!!!!” Visually they were like nothing I’d ever seen before. As insane as the idea of a system with SIXTEEN 18 inch woofers and two 10 inch horns in my place seemed, if they sounded as crazy as they looked I had to get my hands on them. A few weeks later I went and checked them out and was blown away. They were set up in a warehouse space full of metal and concrete and still sounded amazing! Needless to say, I put an order in shortly afterward. The stereo imaging is great, and my mixes have been translating well across the board on different systems in ways I couldn’t achieve before. One of the things I love most is that whether I’m playing at super quiet volume, or house shaking levels, the image remains the same, which is no easy feat. Hearing sound without any cabinet artifacts like acoustic compression and distortion has been a powerful tool as well as an inspiring way to listen, even at low SPLs, really at ANY volume. Another great feature is the fact that the DSP unit that serves as the system’s brain is internet connected via Ethernet, and all curve, preset, and tuning options can be created and edited remotely. No need for a tech to fly in to make adjustments anymore. They can make their adjustments from wherever they are and you can get right back to work.
