➡️ Follow @cnnclimate ➡️ A floating sheet of volcanic rock roughly the size of Manhattan is drifting toward Australia, and scientists say it could help replenish the Great Barrier Reef's coral, half of which have been killed as a result of climate change. The "pumice field,” formed by an underwater volcanic eruption near Tonga, is moving at a pace of roughly 5-15 miles per day, according to Scott Bryan, a professor in geology and geochemistry. As it floats, the field acts a vehicle for marine organisms, and could help distribute sea life to the reef.
