For centuries, scholars generally agreed that the famous eruption of #MountVesuvius that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum occurred on August 24, 79 A.D.—until just last year! 🌋 🔍 In 2018, archaeologists uncovered a new inscription indicating it may have actually occurred on October 24, two whole months later. ⁣

In the early 18th century, the pristinely preserved ash-covered sites were discovered and have been the subject of global fascination ever since. In December 1820, Norwegian painter Johan Christian Dahl visited Vesuvius to witness its eruptions up close. He immediately made an oil sketch that served as the basis for 👆 this work, completed four years later for Prince Christian Frederik, later King Christian VIII of Denmark. #Pompeii⁣
