Every musician who has been a part of this project has helped introduce me to someone new. “Raise Up” was co-written with Mathis Picard, someone who has been a core part of “Something Like a War” from its inception, and whose piano skills continually brought each track to life. He, in turn, introduced me to Vuyo Sotashe, a friend whose voice he said I would need to hear to believe.

Vuyo and I spoke about themes present in the record when writing the lyrics for this, and the preceding part which is on the album as Sibambaneni. I explained to Vuyo a little of my family’s history in South Africa, of my warm welcome there by the young, queer & POC communities of Johannesburg, & how I’d like to write a song about solidarity, and building community. We wrote the following lines in a mixture of English & Xhosa.

Build your people
Make them equal
Raise up your different ones
Sibambaneni sonke

I hope you'll enjoy this song of joyful togetherness. It was the last song Philippe mixed for the record. Artwork by @d.pika , photography by @phoebethegorgon 🌹
